My installation at UNM Los Alamos utilizes painted mirrors to reflect sunlight in a pattern on the side of the building. The mirrors have been painted to cast circular windows of light on the shadowy wall. Plastic gels color the reflected light.
I use windows as the imagery to reflect because they are objects that allow a person to see through one world into another. They are a permeable barrier between interior and exterior spaces. The mirror reflected windows are only visible during certain windows of time throughout the day. Visitors will obtain a different experience depending on what time of day they see the installation.
The idea for this project is important to me since I have recently lost several loved ones. I find myself constantly looking for some kind of magic in the world to bring presence to the absence. In a way, I am always looking for windows to emerge that can let me see something not there.
